Request for Enhanced Safety Measures
Below for parents information a response received regarding letter to Tower Hamlets Council.
(Urgent Request for Enhanced Safety Measures and Patrols During School)
Dear Ms Ward,
Thank you for your letter and for bringing these concerns to our attention.
I am sorry to hear of the incidents that have reportedly affected parents and carers in the vicinity of the school. I appreciate the impact that reports of theft, robbery and phone snatching can have on the school community, particularly where families and young children may feel unsafe during school pick-up times.
Having reviewed your correspondence, I can confirm that I will share the information provided with the Tower Hamlets Enforcement Officer (THEO) management team and request that consideration is given to the deployment of resources within the area during the times identified. Whilst I am able to make this request on your behalf, any decision regarding the allocation and deployment of THEO resources rests with the THEO management team and is subject to operational priorities and available resources.
At present, I am not aware of any reports of this nature having been submitted directly to the Community Safety Team, nor have I received any intelligence or information-sharing from our Police colleagues regarding a pattern of offences in this location. Whilst I am not disputing the experiences reported by parents and carers, it is important that we establish the extent and nature of the issues being experienced before determining the most appropriate response.
To that end, I will seek to make enquiries with the local Police team to establish whether they hold information relating to these incidents and whether there is evidence of an emerging crime pattern affecting the area around the school. This will help inform any discussion around potential interventions and ensure that resources are directed appropriately.
It is also worth noting that whilst a visible THEO presence can provide reassurance and may act as a deterrent, offences such as robbery, theft and phone snatching are criminal matters for which the Metropolitan Police are the lead agency. Any investigation into reported offences, offender identification, evidence gathering and enforcement action would therefore remain a matter for the Police.
In the meantime, I would encourage any victims or witnesses of criminal activity to continue reporting incidents directly to the Police, as accurate reporting assists in developing the intelligence picture and supports decisions regarding patrols and enforcement activity.
Thank you again for bringing these concerns to our attention. Once I have had an opportunity to make enquiries with both THEO management and our Police partners, I will provide a further update.
Kind regards,
Hanifa Khanom
